The Son of Green George Bowen & Mary Elizabeth Fobar of Illinois, they migrated to Texas about 1855. One of eight children,the Bowen family were farmers and cattle raisers. Abraham married Adeline Prudence Courtney Rice in 1871 in DeWitt County, Texas. After her death he remarried to Nancy McNichols in 1909.
He had three children with Adeline, Daniel Hodge Bowen b 1871; Dora Alice b ca 1875 and David b 1877.
