Mary Crim was the daughter of Corporal William B. Crimm and Elizabeth Anderson. Her father was killed in the Battle of Vicksburg 15 Jun 1863 and was a 4th Corporal in the CSA enlisting with the Georgia 41st, Infantry Regiment, Company H. The "Wool Hat Boys".

Sometime during or after the war the fatherless family left the Atlanta region and took a river boat up north and stayed in Posey, Indiana before coming to the St. Louis area. Family tradition is that her grandmother was Cherokee.
