Alma Keyes was born 10 Aug 1839 in Adams County, Illinois to William Henry Harrison Keyes (he went by Harrison Keyes) and Eliza Ann Herrick.
Alma lived a life not experienced by many people. He was born in the area of Nauvoo, Illinois which his family lived South of. He grew up in the turbulent time when violent persecution of Mormons was common place. Both his Grandfather and Uncle Perry Keyes were beaten and whipped and their lives threatened by a mob. They were forced to abandon their home and flee in mid-winter across the Mississippi River to find safe haven. They eventually stopped half way through Iowa to try to survive through the winter. They lived a couple of years in Iowa before leaving for Winter Quarters, Nebraska and on to the Salt Lake Valley with the James Pace Company. In 1850, Alma, at the age of 11 years old, and his family departed Winter Quarters. Not more than 25 miles into the trek, at Clear Creek, Nebraska, his Uncle Perry died and was buried. Clear Creek is now called Yutan, Nebraska. Nine days later his cousin Zenas Keyes died. Zenas was Perry and Lucinda's 12 year old son.
Two years after their arrival in Utah, Alma's father, Harrison was sent on a mission to Oregon. He took his family with him and there Alma met and married Maria Evaline Tracy, 27 Apr 1861 in Clackamas, Oregon. They had 13 children: William Lemuel Keyes, 13 Apr 1863; Willard Alonzo Keyes, 25 Jun 1865; Lyman Henry Keyes, 29 Jan 1866; Joel Francis Keyes, 29 Jan 1868; Joseph Lorin Keyes, 2 Oct 1869; Roseltha Marie Keyes, 2 Sep 1871; George Alma Keyes, 14 Aug 1873; Elsie May Keyes, 19 Sep 1875; Alfred Lee Keyes, 26 Oct 1877; Eliza Jane Keyes, 5 Dec 1879; Charles Ray Keyes, 10 Mar 1881; Alta Virginia Keyes, 23 Nov 1883; Ethel Esther Keyes, 23 Nov 1883.
Maria died 8 Mar 1894. One and a half years later Alma married Jennie Little on 6 Nov 1895. They had 3 children together: Harry Keyes, 12 Aug 1896; Evaline Jennie Keyes, 3 Oct 1898; Theodore McKinley Keyes, 6 Nov 1900.
During his life he worked as a Constable of Uintah, 1st Fire Chief of Ogden, Utah, He was the Marshal of Ogden, Utah in the early 1880s, Farmer, Fruit Grower, business owner (Higginbotham & Keyes), he helped start a farmer owned Cannery and he was a County Health Officer. He was also the Bishop of the Uintah Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for 24 years.
His wife Jennie died 12 Mar 1916 and Alma died two and a half years later on 7 Sep 1918 in Echo, Utah. He was buried in Uintah, Utah on 10 Sep 1918.
