Michał Kruś was born on Aug 16, 1864 in Niemczynek, Wagrowiec, Poland to Jan Kruś ; and Marianna Kujawa. In 1864, Poland was then part of the Prussian partition.

Michał was forced to fight for the Austrian army and decided against that. He emigrated from Poland in 1882 using another's passport and sailed from Hamburg to the US.

Michał americanized his name to Michael. Initially he went to Pennsylvania to work in the mines, however he almost returned to Poland due to the deplorable working conditions of the mines. He heard about work on the railroads and ended up at Auburn Junction, Indiana. He met a priest, Father Young from nearby Garrett, Indiana at the train station and he told him that the B&O Railroad needed people to work. Michael decided to stay. He had land in nearby Ege, Indiana and eventually lived in Garrett.

He married Mary Bianski and they had 6 children Stanislaus who died at 1, Johanna (Jennie), Helen, Veronica, John and Francis (Frank).

Michael and family remained in Garrett and Michael worked for the B&O until retirement.
