Death Calls Beloved Lady At Home Here
Mrs. Charles Pefley, Descendent Of Prominent Pioneer Families Of City, Passes Away Monday P.M.
Mrs. Charles Pefley, whose life chapter offered a beautiful and interesting contribution to the life of Rensselaer, and a descendent of families whose names are included among the very earliest of prominent pioneer families of Rensselaer and vicinity, passed away at the family residence of on 8 Front street at 2:10 o'clock Monday afternoon after lying in an unconscious state since Sunday morning.
Heart complications following closely upon other complications that developed a week ago last Saturday was the direct cause of death of the highly esteemed lady with whose life are to be associated the named Bedford and Warner, names that stand out so prominently in the history of Jasper county.
Although her health had been impaired to some extent of recent months, she recently enjoyed a sudden marked improvement, and within a short time apparently had regained her former excellent health. About ten days ago she was stricken ill and it probably was the illness that induced the hear strain that resulted in her death. She had not previously suffered heart ailment.
Mrs. Pefley was born in Rensselaer on August 30, 1873, the daughter of John Philip Warner and Julie Estelle (Bedford) Warner. There are many who will recall her father, who was engaged as a carriage maker on S. Front street for many years, and, who was more familiarly known as Jack Warner. Too, they will recall the Bedford family of which her mother was a member, a name that still endures through reference to the "old Bedford place" a short distance east of Rensselaer.
Mrs. Pefley's lifetime until her marriage to Charles Pefley of Remington was spent here in her native city. Her name is to be found among the earlier graduates of Rensselaer high school. She was a member of the 1893 class. Following her high school days she took a business course at the Business College branch of Purdue university, after which she returned here and for a time served a Court Reporter of the local circuit court. She was married to Charles Pefley of Remington on March 6, 1899, and resided there until 1916, when the family moved to Rensselaer.
Surviving besides the husband is a son, Hildreth, of this city, two grandchildren, Julie Estelle Pefley and Charles Philip Pefley, and a brother, D.J. Warner of
Rensselaer who at present is in Town, Alabama.
Mrs. Pefley's charm and graciousness and the consideration she held for all, her deep interest in her community and the friendliness and esteem which she extended indiscriminately made her genuinely beloved and respected. Her loyalty to her home city and friends was marked. Her passing is another tragic note in the life of the city.
Rites Wednesday
The funeral services will be held from the W.J. Wright Chapel at 2:00 o'clock Wednesday. The Rev. C.W. Postill will officiate. Interment will be at Remington. The remains are at the Chapel.
