James is the eldest child of Ammon Goode Hancock and Charlotte Hewitt. James married Alice Jean "Lollie" Williams. Their children are James Ammon Hancock Jr., John "Walker" Hancock, Claudine Hancock Boyle, Elizabeth Hancock Cameron, Lemuel Absalom Hancock, Ella Tyler Hancock Reid, Duval Wilson Hancock, Eugene Sully "Sonny" Hancock, and William Thornhill "T" Hancock. James and Lollie were predeceased by children James Jr. and Duval. Both James and Lollie were cremated, and their ashes were finally buried in 1946, next to these 2 sons.
