Charlene May, of Chula Vista, CA, passed away on February 22, 2008, after a long illness. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. March 20, 2008, at Chapel of Rose, Glen Abbey Memorial Park, Bonita, CA. A second memorial service will be held in Turnersville, Texas, at the end of June.

Charlene was born in the now vanished Elijah Community of Coryell County, to Murvil and Odessa White Gartman. She attended school in Pidcoke before the family was moved from the Camp Hood area at the beginning of World War II. The family settled in Turnersville, where she finished high school.

Upon graduation Charlene moved to Dallas and attended business school. She was employed by the Adleta Company, where she met James May of Bonham, Texas. They were married on November 9, 1951, in Dallas, and James joined the Marines shortly after. He was stationed in San Diego, CA, where Charlene found employment with Rohr Aircraft as an executive secretary and remained with the company until the birth of her daughters. Charlene was employed as a human resource manager for a larger water supply district until her retirement.

She remained a Texan at heart and returned yearly for family reunions and the Turnersville Class of 1950 reunions. Charlene and James celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary in November 2007. She was a Methodist.

Charlene was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, M.D. Gartman; and a sister, Jo Ann Barnett.

She is survived by her husband, James; daughters, Suzanne May Neidermyer and husband, Fred, of Poway, CA, and Tricia May Kingsley and husband, John, of Coto De Caza, CA; grandchildren, Ross and Mitchell Kingsley and Madison and Harrison Neidermyer; brothers, Donnie Gartman and wife, Reba, of Turnersville and Randall Gartman and wife, Coleen, of Pearl; sisters-in-law, Charlotte Gartman, of Gatesville and Lois Treadway, of Richardson, TX; brother-in-law, Roger Barnett, of Jonesboro; and numerous nieces and nephews.
