Xavier Klein, born Oct 26, 1826 and died Feb 3, 1885.. He was a prominent figure and the main life of the town of Mt Pleasant after Thomas Fortune left and moved to Atchison. Mr Klein was known to everyone as X Klein. He was a native of Baden, Germany, in which county, he learned the tailor's trade , coming to the state of New York at the age of of 20, there following his trade for two years, then he emigrated to Madison, Indiana and continued his occupation until 1857. In that year, he moved to Kansas and located at Sumner, where he operated a boarding house until 1861, when he partenshipped with Jacob Pakles, he established a general merchandise business. In 1862, being in poor health, he sold his interest to his partner and in 1864, settled at Mt Pleasant and again opened a general store, which he conducted for many years. He was postmaster for a number of years and held other local offices, among them, Justic of the Peace. He was a man of much influence in his community.
