FORMER ROUTT RESIDENT DIES IN RIFLE

Maude May NICHOLS, the daughter of Walter A. and Ellen M. Parks ROPP, was born on February the 13th, 1883 at Cedar City, Iowa and passed away on March the 7th, 1970 at Rifle, at the age of 87 years, and 24 days.

As a small girl her parents moved to Kansas where they homesteaded a farm and she grew to womanhood. In 1900 she moved to Denver, Colorado where she met and married her husband, Francis Howard NICHOLS in 1902. Mr. and Mrs. NICHOLS lived in Denver until 1913 when the family moved to Routt County where Mr. NICHOLS became a coal miner and homesteaded near Steamboat Springs.

After World War One they moved to Tow Creek, Colorado near Mt. Harris where Mr. NICHOLS became engaged in the oil business doing contract work for the Texas Company. Mr. NICHOLS passed away in 1940. In 1943 Mrs. NICHOLS moved to Compton, California until 1945 when she returned to Colorado and lived at Meeker. In 1967 she moved to the E. Dene Moore Memorial Home in Rifle where she has since resided.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Guy in 1950 and Melton who passed away in infancy.

Mrs. NICHOLS was a member of the Congregational Church.

Survivors include two sons, Francis Howard NICHOLS, Jr. of Oatman, Arizona and Andrew S. NICHOLS of Saudi Arabia; two brothers, Walter ROPP of Deertail, Oklahoma and Frank ROPP of Cody, Wyoming; a sister, Mrs. Tom (Mary) TORRANCE of Independence, Kansas, three grandchildren and other relatives.

Funeral services for Mrs. Maude May NICHOLS was held Thursday, March 12th from the Sowder Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Otto B. Duckworth officiating. Burial was in the Steamboat Springs Cemetery with graveside rites conducted at 2:00 p.m. Mrs. NICHOLS passed away Saturday afternoon at the Clagett Memorial Hospital.
