He was the only son of Tristram Coffin and Jane Ann (Newton) Tallman. This was Tristram's first marriage and her second after the death of first husband Solomon Tallman. Henry's father Tristram had a farm just south of Millbrook in Dutchess Co, NY and had come from a long line of Coffin's who were whalers from Nantucket. Upon his fathers death Henry inherited the farm at age 21 and sold the property about 1875. Henry married Julia A. Jones and had one daughter Lillian C. By the time of his mothers death in 1893 Henry & family had moved to Yonkers, NY. His daughter Lillie married widower Charles F. Wicker, MD who had 2 daughters they lived in Saranac Lake, NY.
