During WWII, PFC Brown was a member of Company G, 310th Infantry, 78th Division and served in the European Theater.


Ray Alvin Brown, 2647 St. Paul Rd. Chambersburg, passed away October 28, 2010 in Shippensburg Health Care Center. Born March 1, 1926 in Mt. Union, PA, he was one of 11 children born to the late Ira W. and Sarah (Lanert) Brown.

Ray was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church where he served as an usher and was in the Resurrection Choir. He also built the alter for the Adoration Chapel. He retired in 1974, after 31 years, from Letterkenny Army Depot.

He proudly served in the U.S. Infantry, 78th division and the National Guard 28th division; He served in WWII at the Battle of the Bulge. He was a life member of the VFW and the honor guard. He was a member of NARFE Chapter 1063 in Chambersburg, the Falling Spring Chapter of AARP #2840.

Ray loved to hunt and fish with his friend, Sam Tarquino. He loved to play the guitar and to listen to country music. He also enjoyed gardening, but most especially he loved his family.

Left behind to celebrate Ray's memory is his loving wife, Peggy Ann Williams Brown, Chambersburg; one son: Patrick Brown, Summerville, SC; one daughter, Kelly Miner, Chambersburg; a step-son: Steve Oyler, Chambersburg; a step-daughter: Kelly Johnson, Mt. Pleasant, SC; a sister: Margaret "Peg" Kimple; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and 9 brothers and sisters, Ray was preceded in death by a son: Michael Ray Brown.

A Funeral Mass, celebrated by Rev. James R. O'Brien will be held in Corpus Christi Catholic Church on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with a viewing one hour prior. Graveside military honors provided by Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post #1599 will be in Corpus Christi Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave. Chambersburg, PA 17201.
