Anne met Seth Martin when both worked at the jail at Kerton Lindsey in Lincolnshire, England. Seth was the head turnkey and schoolmaster for six years. Anne was matron of the same instituion for several years. They could not marry and retain their positions so they resigned and Seth married Anne in 1846. Their children are Louisa R, Mary J, John A and Charles S.

They emigrated to the U.S. in 1851, settling in Sturgis County, Michigan. Seth worked for the Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana Railroad Company until 1856, when the family moved to Chickasaw County, Iowa.

Seth was one of the first to volunteer when the Civil War began. He enlisted in Co H 4th Iowa Cavalry in 1861 and was discharged in 1865.

After his discharge, Seth returned to Chickasaw County. He was postmaster, a notary public, an insurance agent, and he established a real estate business.

Anne died in 1885 at the age of 71 years. Seth died from pneumonia in 1894 at the age of 75 years.
