He was a retired miner, a member of American Legion Post 103 and Masonic Lodge 99, and an Army veteran of World War II. Surviving: wife, Stella Adkins Messer of Harts; daughter, Sandra Gartin of Sanford, N.C.; son, Daniel Messer of Harts; sister, Hessie Hunt of Delbarton; brother, Albert Messer of Mount Sterling, Ky.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at James Funeral Home, Logan, with the Rev. Earnest Neace officiating. Entombment will be in Highland Memory Gardens, Godby. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Logan General Hospital Auxiliary.
