(The following notice concerning Mrs. Alexander Porter was published at the time of her death):
"Mrs. Louise Bevans Porter died at her home on West Main street, New London, Monday, March 30, 1896. She was born in Otsego County, New York, January 15, 1816, and came with her parents to Mohican township, Wayne county, Ohio in 1818.
About the year 1840 she removed with her parents to Orange township, Ashland county. She taught school in both Wayne and Ashland counties in the earlier part of her life.
February 2, 1847, she was united in marriage to Alexander Porter. They lived in Ashland during Mr. Porter's term of prosecuting attorney, when they moved to New London, in the year 1858, where she resided until her death. Her husband died about twenty years ago, and about five years ago, her only living child, the late Mrs. R. S. Giles, died leaving Mrs. Porter as the last surviving member of her family.
Mrs. Porter was always a frail woman, but notwithstanding her physical weakness she was a women possessing remarkable vitality, was a great reader, intellectual, well informed on church, public, and political affairs, in all of which she took a keen interest. She was a woman of strong determination, but gentle and lovable, possessing more than ordinary affection for her grandchildren and home surroundings. In her death the family mourns an invaluable member and the community one of its oldest and most respected citizens.
Very brief services were held at the house, Wednesday morning, on account of the serious illness of Mr. Porter Giles, interment taking place in the family lot in the village cemetery.
