Albert Gravatt, 82, Who Came Here Three-Quarters of Century Ago, A Stroke Victim

The Traer community lost one of its earliest residents Sunday when Albert Gravatt, 82 years old, died about 4:15 a. m. at his home here. Despite his advanced age he had always enjoyed comparatively good health until four or five weeks ago, when he suffered a light paralytic stroke. His condition then grew rapidly more serious and It was evident some days before his death that he could not survive. The funeral service, held Tuesday afternoon at the home, was conducted by the Rev. C. E. Luce, pastor of the Traer Methodist church, of which the decedent had been a member since 1896. Burial was in Buckingham cemetery here. Five sons of the decedent were numbered among the pall bearers, who were Clifford, Roy, Hugh, Guy and Howard Gravatt and Jay Wood.

Mr. Gravatt, a son of Ones and Sarah Gravatt, was born January 3, 1851, at Salina, Ohio. He was one of a family of two sons and seven daughters. When he was 7 years old the family came west to Tama county, where they settled in the Old Buckingham neighborhood. A few years later they moved to what is now the Mrs. Cap Gravatt farm, straight north of Traer. On November 20, 1873, Mr. Gravatt was married to Irene Morse. The couple engaged in farming for thirty years on the land five miles north of Traer now operated by a son, Roy. Twenty-nine years ago, they retired and moved to town.

The couple were the parents of seven children—six sons and one daughter all of whom, with the widow, survive. These are Arthur Gravatt, of Berkeley, California.; Mrs. Mabel Mosely, Daytona Beach, Florida; Clifford Gravatt, of Spirit Lake, Iowa; Roy, north of Traer; Hugh, of Onawa, Iowa; Guy, of Traer; and Howard, of Marshalltown, formerly a resident of Crystal township. The decedent also leaves three sisters—Mrs. H. L. Daniel of Traer; and Mrs. R. H. Pritchard and Mrs. Cornelia Sieh, both of Chicago—as well as twelve grandchildren.

Mr. Gravatt was vice-president of tile First National bank of Traer holding this office for about twenty-five years before his death. He was formerly a member of the Traer board of education for a number of years. Here from a distance for the funeral service Tuesday were Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Gravatt, of Spirit Lake; Hugh Gravatt, Onawa; and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Gravatt, Mrs. S. T. McKim, P. F. Arney and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Sheely all of Marshalltown, besides Mrs. Mabel Mosely, of Florida, who had been here for some time assisting in her father's care.
