Michael's parents were Henry Bolender (1770-1837) and his wife Anna Catharina Miller (1767-1832). Both parents died in Snyder Co., Pennsylvania and are buried in unmarked graves. In 1840 Michael and his brother John brought their families to Stephenson Co. where Michael settled in Oneco Twp. near the state line and engaged in farming. In 1847 he was elected as a school director and in the same year he assisted in building the Block School. He continued to be active in the affairs of his community until blindness overtook him in 1875.
