Sarah Ann Pontious - Hartzel daughter of Samuel and Lydia Pontious, was born August 22, 1840, In Pickaway County Ohio.
She was baptized in infancy and later confirmed in the United Brethren Church. Later in life she became a member of the Reformed Church, to which faith she remained loyal unto the end.
When about four years of age, she with other members of her family moved to Seneca County, where she grew to womanhood. On January 5, 1865, she was united in marriage to Monroe Hartzel by Rev. Eli Keller, at the old Reformed parsonage at Bellevue. To this union were born nine children, seven of whom survive. They are: Mrs. Ella Schwenn, William A. and Homer R., of Willard, Ohio, Mrs. Sadie Peacock of Cleveland, Ohio, Samuel R. Hartzel of Green Springs, Ohio, Mrs. Kate Brandal and Mrs. Sylvia Krauss, Bellevue. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Rose Messer, Lyons, Mich., twenty-eight grand children and eighteen great grand children.
Her husband preceded her in death nearly two years ago. Practically the entire lives of Mr. and Mrs. Hartzel were spent on a farm in Seneca County. They resided in Flat Rock for a time, until failing health and old age compelled them to give up their home three and one half years ago to live with their daughter, Mrs. Sylvia Krauss, who remained faithful to them until death took them to eternal rest.
Mrs. Hartzel's last illness covered a period of about a mouth, the last week of which she was bedfast. She passed away October 9, 1924, at the age of 84 years; 1 month and 17 days.
She was of cheerful, kind disposition and to know her was to love her. A lovely character has gone from our midst. She will be sadly missed by her relatives and a large circle of friends.
