On January 5, 1865, he married Sarah Ann Pontious. The marriage was performed by Rev. Eli Keller, at the old Reformed parsonage at Bellevue. To this union were born nine children, seven of whom survive at the time of his death. They are: Mrs. Ella Schwenn, William A. and Homer R., of Willard, Ohio, Mrs. Sadie Peacock of Cleveland, Ohio, Samuel R. Hartzel of Green Springs - Clyde, Ohio, Mrs. Kate Brandal and Mrs. Sylvia Krauss, Bellevue.
He was also survived by one sister Mrs. William Straubaugh, Bellevue and two brothers F.A. Hartzel, Norwalk and Edwin Hartzell of Republic.
