After her father died in 1859, Betsy lived with her widowed grandmother, Ardella, in a multi-generational household. In 1860, District 11, Houston, Georgia, it included her grandmother, Ardella, aunts, Elizabeth and Martha, and two cousins. (Household: Ardelia Smith; daughter Elizabeth, 20, Wes Spait, 17, George Walker, 16, Martha I Smith, 15, and Betsy I Walker, 7.) In 1870 the household was similar with the addition of a cousin, Fannie Fordham.
On 19 Nov 1873, Betsy Walker married Cornelius Brown in Houston County, Georgia. They had a daughter, Hattie, who was probably named for her grandmother, Harriet Smith Walker. Hattie who died in 1879 when she is four years old is memorialized on a marker in the Smith Family Cemetery which she shares with her father.
Betsy continued to live near her cousins as illustrated by the 1880 US Census of the Upper 11th, Houston, Georgia. She is enumerated as the wife of C.E. Brown, a farmer; no children in the household. They are enumerated one family away from a 19 year old farmer, John Rockmore (Roquemore), her first cousin. Neal Brown died in 1893.
Her second husband, minister and businessman Jacob Riley Owen, is enumerated with her in the combined Militia Districts 500, 970, Upper 11th, Lower 11th, Houston, Georgia, on the 1900 US Census. The couple had been married in 1895. Four years later he died and was buried with his first wife in Randolph County, Georgia.
By 1920, Betsy had settled into her last home. She shared a house in Fitzgerald, Ben Hill County, Georgia, with her childhood friend and cousin, Fannie Fordham, for the next twenty-three years. I hope they were happy ones.
Betsy Walker Brown Owen was buried in her family's cemetery in 1943. It was the last known burial in "this peaceful place."
