James Baldwin was born 1825/1826, in Connecticut. He was married to Elizabeth Bown on 28 Oct. 1853 at Independence, Buchanan County, Iowa by O.H.P. Roszell, Buchanan County Judge. They were the parents of 5 children: Amelia Ann (1852-1935), Willis B. (1856-1947), Ellen Jane (1858-1943), Mollie E. (1860-?), & George Henry (1863-?).

By 1856 they were living on a rural farm in Cedar Township, Black Hawk County, Iowa. On December 30th, 1863, at age 38 years, he enlisted as a Private with Company C, 32nd Iowa Volunteers Infantry. His youngest child, George was just 9 months old.

On the 3-4 June 1864, he died of "Phetrisis Pulminalis" developed from Pneumonia at US General Hospital #3 in Vicksburg, Mississippi, [Scofield & Olney, Surgeons; 1864]. He was buried at Vicksburg, exhumed, identified, and re-interred at Vicksburg National Cemetery [Vicksburg NMP 153/1]; one of only 4250 Civil War soldiers identified out of 17,000 Civil war soldiers buried there.

It took Elizabeth over a year to obtain enough documentation to collect the Widow's Military Pension she was entitled to because there was another "James Baldwin" that died at the hospital during the same time period as her husband, both from Iowa. She was buried in her father's family's plot at Anton Cemetery, Cedar Twp., Black Hawk Co., Iowa near their grandson, Harry Baldwin.Husband to Elizabeth Baldwin, and father to five children: Amelia, Willis, Ellen Jane, Mollie E., and George H. Baldwin.

Enlisted as a Private on December 30, 1863 at the age of 38, joining Company C, 32nd Iowa Infantry Regiment.

Died of disease on June 4, 1864 at Vicksburg, MS.
