Ernestine Smith was born July6, 1937 in Sherrill, Arkansas to the late Ardis Duncan and David Wilkins. Her early childhood was spent in Arkansas. She was educated in the Arkansas school system, attending Altheimer Elementary and Sherrill Junior High and High School.

At the age of eleven Ernestine accepted Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized at the Corinth Baptist Church in Sherrill, Arkansas under the leadership of the late Rev. G. W. McComb.

In 1955 she left Arkansas to seek a better life for herself. She was tired of picking and chopping cotton and the many injustices she was subjected to. She made her home here in San Diego.

In 1957 Ernestine joined Mt. Erie Baptist church in Frontier under the leadership of Rev Hayworth. She reunited with Mt. Erie in May 1971 under the leadership of Rev. Melvin Darden. She remained a faithful and dedicated member until her untimely death on March 16, 1999. Shew was faithful as an usher and served as assistant supervisor to the junior, youth and young adult ushers for many years. She was also a member of the Senior Women Missionary Auxiliary.

In 1959 Ernestine was united in marriage to Lawrence B. Smith, Jr. This was a happy marriage and lasted thirty years until his death in 1989. Children in this family are Patricia, Nathan, Brenda and Alice.

Ernestine entered for nurses assistant at Grossmont College. After completion she worked as a nurses assistant in many medical facilities in the area. In 1973 she began working at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in the Food & Nutrition department. Ernestine was a valued and loyal employee for twenty-five years as a dietary clerk until her retirement in July 1998.

Ernestine (known to many as "Stine") had a great love for her family, children and grandchildren. She had an even greater love for God. She enjoyed doing for others, attending gospel concerts, revivals and listening to gospel music.

She always had a smile for everyone even if she didn't feel like smiling, she was known for her down home hospitality. She treated everyone special, she was a generous person who gave freely of her time and worldly good to help others. She was warm and personable in her relationships with people and devoted to friends.

She departed this life on Tuesday, March 16, 1999, leaving a legacy of love,kindness and respect to all whose life she touched.

She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Patricia (Charles) Thornton of Cerritos, CA, Brenda Smith and Alice Readye of san Diego, CA;; one son, Nathan Young of San Diego, CA; six grandchildren; two sisters, Samella Scott of Los Angeles, CA and barbara J. Willkins of Chicago, Illinois; two brother, Sammy Lee Harris of Los Angeles, CA and Rev. Milton (Mary) Franklin of Paramount, CA; one stepsister, six step children, fourteen step-grandchildren; four sister-in-laws and a host of nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.
