Elmer Barnhouse Sr., Rogers Mayor
ROGERS – Elmer Dale Barnhouse, Sr., 63, of 7601 Highland Ave., died of cancer at 5:20 a.m. Friday at Salem Community Hospital. He had been a patient there for two weeks. He was the mayor of Rogers.
He was born Jan. 30, 1923, in East Palestine, a son of the late Leonard W. and Myrtle (Butler) Barnhouse. After residing in New Waterford, he lived in Rogers for 35 years. Early in life, he was employed at Lewis Orchards in New Waterford. He was also employed as a maintenance man at National Rubber Machinery and worked at Phil's Sales and Service, both in Columbiana. For the last 15 years, he was employed at the Salem Label Co.
He was a councilman for 12 years in Rogers and was serving his third year as mayor. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II.
He is survived by his wife, the former Florence Ann Gibson, whom he married Oct. 9, 1942; a daughter, Mrs. Albert (Dail Ann) Huff of Rogers; two sons, Roland Barnhouse and Elmer D Barnhouse Jr., both of Rogers; a sister, Mrs. Edward (Emma) Hazelwood of East Palestine; five brothers, Alfred of Butler, Pa.; Clyde of Livermore, Calif.; Earl of Mount Clair, Calif.; Lawrence of Del Rio, Texas; and Chalmers of Iowa and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, George L. Barnhouse; a sister, Elaine, and three brothers, Arthur, Thomas and Eugene Barnhouse.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Warrick-Kummer Funeral Home, Columbiana, with the Rev. Kevin Donley of the Church of the Nazarene, East Palestine, officiating. Burial will be at Crest Haven Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
