CAR CRASHES ON BRIDGE, ENDS LIFE OF ELSWORTH BAUM - Elsworth J. Baum, 62,
popular citizen of Kitty Hawk and a retired veteran of 30 years services in the
Coast Guard, died Saturday night around 8:00 in the icy waters beneath the
Wright Memorial Bridge over Currituck Sound. The truck he was driving enroute
home from Elizabeth City went through the rail of the bridge and overboard.

At the time of this writing his body had not been recovered. Elijah W. Baum, a
relative, was following close behind and coming to the spot heard the
unfortunate man calling for help. He rushed back to his car after discovering
the man's predicament and attempted to pass a chain over the bridge to help him
but found the victim had disappeared. He had been in the icy waters several
minutes and it is likely he was also suffering from injuries resulting from the
crash.

Mr. Baum had been driven to Elizabeth City by his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Shirley
Baum, so that he might drive the truck back as he is engaged in the fish
business. He was alone at the time. It is possible that a blow out on the old
unrebuilt section of the bridge caused the accident. The bridge had been under
repair more than four years and at the rate the State Highway engineers are
working on it, may be another 4 years due to lack of sufficient number of men.
The old decking is studded with nails and is costing the citizens of this
section a pretty penny in tires punctured and ruined.

Mr. Baum was the brother of Edward N. Baum, Chairman of the Dare County Board of
Education. He was active in community affairs and his genial nature made him
highly popular.
