Adam Saale, One of City's Pioneers, Died Early Today

Passed Away at His Calhoun Street Home at 1:30 o'clock

Native of the City

Served Two Terms as Member of the First Board of Public Works Here

Adam Saale, a member of one of Chillicothe's pioneer families, died this morning in his home, 440 Calhoun Street, at 1:30 o'clock following a long illness. Mr. Saale's health had been failing for the past year and a half and his condition became serious two weeks ago when he developed pneumonia.

The body is at the Gordon Home for Funerals but will be removed Saturday afternoon to the family home to lie in state until the time of the funeral. The rosary will be said at the home Sunday evening at 6 o'clock.

Funeral services conducted by the Rev.B. S. Owens will be held from St. Colomban's Church Monday morning at 9 o'clock.Burial will be in the Catholic cemetery.

Mr. Saale was born here January 7, 1860. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Saale, Sr., were natives of what was then known as Alsace, France. They came to the United States in the early 1850's and were married in St. Louis where they lived for a few years before moving to Chillicothe.

Mr. Saale lived his entire life in Chillicothe. For about 28 years, he and the late Peter Burgy, Sr. were in the saloon business here but Mr. Saale retired before the time of prohibition (Sic.).

He served two terms as a member of the first board of public works in Chillicothe. Mr. Saale was the last surviving member of that first board, other members of which were Frank Adams, Paul Dixon, and John Ryan. The late John Taylor was mayor at that time --- the time the new light plant was built.

Mr. Saale was one of the first stockholders in the Chillicothe National Bank and for many years was one of the directors of that bank where his son, Ed Saale, is now cashier.

He was a member of a family of four sons and one daughter. Only one of the sons, a brother of Mr. Saale, survives. He is Dan Saale of this city.

Mr. Saale, besides his brother, leaves two daughters, Misses Ett a and Mary Saale of the home, two sons Ed Saale and ClarenceSaale of this city; thirteen grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Mrs. Saale to whom he was married in St. Colomban's church here October 24, 1884*, died ten years ago.

He was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Colomban's church and a member of The Knights of Columbus as long as it was in existence here.

*Note: the Missouri Marriage Record from Livingston County says they were married on 11 November, not October as the obit states. They had made application for the license the previous day.
