William Augustus Strother graduated from the Medical Department of the University of New York City, known today as the New York University School of Medicine. He was a CSA surgeon during the Civil War. After the Civil War, he moved to Mitchell County outside Albany, Georgia, and in 1867 he married Louisa Stevens Bacon. Around 1876 their family moved to Albany, Georgia, where he became a prominent physician and a business and community leader. They had eight children of whom four reached adulthood.
