Zelma attended school in Taiban and Fort Sumner. After graduating, she moved to Clovis. On 14 May 1952, Zelma married Jimmy Self in Clovis.
Zelma worked for Mountain Bell Telephone until her retirement in 1982. She later worked eight years for the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Department and retired there in 1992. She was a longtime member of Trinity Methodist Church and the Telephone Pioneers.
Zelma died, at age 65, shortly after being airlifted to Lubbock Methodist Hospital, Lubbock, Texas.
The obituary lists the following survivors: her husband, Jimmy; one daughter and sone-in-law, Terri and Stephen Doerr; her grandchildren, Michael, Jarrad and Sarah, all of Portales; three brothers, Bob Boyd Jr., Clovis, Don Boyd, Amarillo, and Ben Boyd, Boise, Idaho.
Services for Zelma were held at Steed-Todd Chapel. The Rev. Kenneth Broad officiated. Burial was at Lawn Haven Memorial Gradens. Steed-Todd Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Casket bearers were Bobby Corder, Ted Hardin, Leon Meeks, Hershel Parker, buddy Prince, Jackie Dunlap and Bill Strand.
Honorary bearers will be all former co-workers at Mountain Bell.
