James Nicholas was born on August 6, 1832 to Jonathan and Susan Nicholas in South Carolina. Not much is known of him until he moved to Appling County, Georgia by 1860. During the Civil War James was enlisted in Company K 54th Georgia Regiment in the Confederate Army. On April 18, 1862 James was discharged due to a disability. A census says that James had a farm and had his children help him work the farm.
