Jacob Herman Portenier, son of Jacob and Susanna Portenier, was born near Guide Rock, November 12, 1879, and passed away at his home north of Guide Rock, April 11, 1939 at the age of 59 years, 4 months and 29 days. He was the oldest of a family of nine children. His entire life was spent in Beaver Creek township.

He was married to Albie Sidlo, May 31, 1904 and to this union were born five children. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife, three sons, Earl, Ralph and Keith, all of Guide Rock; and one daughter, Mrs. Glen Bosley of Haigler.

He also leaves two granddaugthers, five grandsons; three brothers, Otto and Robert of Guide Rock, and Walter of Dubuque, Iowa; and five sisters, Mattie, Rose and Mildred of Guide Rock, Lillian of Laramie, Wyoming, and Mrs. Daisie Loucks of Tulsa, Oklahoma; besides a host of other relatives and friends.

He was a kind, loving husband, father, brother, neighbor and his life was happily spent serving and sacrificing for others. His happiest hours were spent with his family gathered around him and during his last illness he enjoyed having them near.
