Evelyn Penland Blau, 92, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003.

A lifelong resident of Asheville, she was a daughter of the late Charles Nelson and Bertha Mae Kitchens Penland. She was an activity director at Highland Hospital, a member of Central United and St. Paul's Methodist Churches, a member of the Asheville Toast Mistress Club and United Methodist Women. She was preceded in death by a brother, John G. "Johnnie" Penland and a sister, Blanche Penland Pruett.

Surviving are three brothers, C.L. "Bill" Penland and his wife, Alyce, of Rock Hill, S.C., Paul Lee Penland and his wife, Velda, of Lenoir and Garrett E. Penland and his wife, Mary June, of Asheville; two sisters, Jackie Penland of Asheville and Modena Penland Brown and her husband, Larry, of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a sister-in-law, Genie Penland of Asheville and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Swannanoa Chapel of Penland & Sons Funeral Home. The Rev. Katie Packett will officiate. Private burial will be at Riverside Cemetery.
