A life-long resident of Asheville, she was a daughter of the late Charles Nelson and Bertha Mae Kitchens Penland. She was predeceased by brothers, James Nelson, her three year old playmate, John G. and Charles Lemuel (Bill) Penland and sisters, Blanche Penland Pruett and Evelyn Penland Blau.
She was a lifelong member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and retired as head bookkeeper of the Auditing Department of Sears Roebuck & Co. in 1973 after more than 25 years of service.
As the third child in a family of nine, she was one who loved taking care of the families' new mothers and babies. She always remembered birthdays with gifts and cards, and all envelopes held her trademark; a stick of chewing gum. Her fried chicken, macaroni casserole and chocolate fudge made her a favorite family cook. She will be truly missed by a multitude of family members.
Surviving are her brothers, Paul Lee (Velda) Penland of Lenior, Garrett E. (Mary June) Penland of Asheville; sister, Mary Modena (Walter Larry) Brown of Chattanooga, Tenn.
The graveside service will be at Riverside Cemetery. The Rev. In-Yong Lee will officiate.
