Gertrude May, the two year old daughter of Clyde and Meda Heston of Woodburn, was terribly scalded by falling into a pan of hot water last Saturday at about ten o'clock, and died after three hours of suffering, at 1 p.m.
Her mother was busy with the morning work and was preparing to scrub the floor. She set a dish-pan filled with hot water on the floor and was just ready to start when a rap at the door called her away a moment and she was talking with a neighbor at the door when the little tot came in the house and was walking backward, watching her older sister when she tripped on the pan, falling squarely in it. Her screams called her mother quickly to her aid, but the tender little body was terribly burned and medical aid could not save her.
Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church Monday, May 8th, at 11 a.m. The church was draped in mourning, and floral tributes were profuse. Services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. W.M. Leiser. Hundreds of friends and neighbors were present to mourn the terrible fate of the little one and to show their sympathy with the heart-broken parents.
It was one of those accidents which, while not the fault of any one leaves behind it the terrible regret that it might have been prevented. Mrs. Heston was in no way to blame, and her grief at the terrible result calls forth the most sincere sympathy of every one.
Little Gertrude May was born June 1, 1909, and was 1 year, 11 months and 5 days old at the time of her death. She leaves a father, mother and a sister, Viola, grandparents and many relatives and friends of the family to mourn her sad fate and to sympathize with the parents in their great sorrow.
