Son of A. J. and Juanita Elizabeth Tom Short, he served as alderman for Mount Ida city council; was a retired Gibson Supersave manager; Korean War veteran; and member of Assembly of God Church. He was predeceased by one son, Jeremy Short.

Survivors include his wife, Vi Dillard Short of Mount Ida; four sons; three stepsons; three daughters; thirty-one grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his mother of DeQueen; six brothers; one sister; and nieces and nephews.
