John was the infant son of Homor A. and Betsy (Freeman) Butler and was born on the family farm located near the town of Volga City, Sperry Township, Clayton County, Iowa. He was born in 1855, three years after his parents moved from Rock County, Wisconsin. John lived for less than one year; one source reported that the baby choke on corn bread. It is assumed that he was buried at the Garretson Cemetery located near Volga City where other members of the Freeman clan are interred including cousins, aunts, uncles and grandmother. His parents moved from Iowa to Kansas and then to Washington state where they were both buried in Lakeview Cemetery, King County, Washington located in Seattle.
