From Hollandn St.John - "Cerena was the daughter of Homer A. and Betsy (Freeman) Butler and was born at Porter, Rock County, Wisconsin on September 30, 1852. She had five brothers and sisters: Charlotte Ann, Wesley Morrow, John, Homer Norton and Nellie Bell. Her parents were married for about four years when they moved from Wisconsin to Clayton County, Iowa where they established a farm near Volga City in Sperry Township. She spent her few years of her life in the vicinity of Volga on the family farm. In the early spring of 1874 she married Thomas W. Cummings. Cerena passed away six weeks after she was married on April 11, 1874 at the age of twenty-one. Thomas was born January 22, 1841. He remarried and had several children. He was nearly eighty-three years old when he died. The following, concerning his death, was published in the Arlington News (Fayette County, Iowa): "Thomas W. Cummings, pioneer resident of Volga Community, passed away Wed., Dec. 27, 1923, age 82 years, 11 mo. 5 da. Funeral in Volga, Sat., Dec. 29, in charge of Rev. H. A. Crumb, of the M. E. Church. Interment in Volga." The nearest cemetery to Volga City at that time was the Garretson Cemetery so it is assumed Cerena as well as her husband were both buried there. However, their gravestones have not been discovered."
