Julius Lowenberg was born in 1833 in Prussia, and was an early member of Portland’s first Jewish synagogue Temple Beth Israel. He emigrated from Germany to New York, then followed the Gold Rushes to the West Coast. He was 16 when he arrived in Portland, Oregon in 1857. Julius Lowenberg became a supplier to miners, and from that a career in merchandising grew.
