Sylvester Roach was the Son of Thomas J. Roach and Mary Ann Pebworth. Married 1st Zelpha Ester Longworth on 16 May 1901 in Beattyville, Lee County, Kentucky. Zelpha was the daughter of George Washington Longworth and Jane Ginsey Pittman; 2nd on 27 Nov 1948 in Vincent, KY to Lucy Snowden Caudill, daughter of Arch and Nannie Duff Snowden.

Beattyville, Ky., Nov. 14 - Sylvester Roach, 82, of Beattyville, was killed instantly at 8:30 a.m. today when he was hit by a two-ton dump truck owned by the C.M. Carpenter Trucking Co.


Sheriff Oval Gross reported that Roach was standing at the side of the Booneville Road talking with a neighbor, Jim Bowles of Congleton. The driver of the truck, Paul Robinson, 24, of Burning Springs, in an attempt to avoid hitting Roach applied the brakes and skidded into the man. The truck overturned after striking Roach.


Robinson who was not injured, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and was placed under bond.


Roach, who was a farmer, is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lucy S. Roach, Xenia, Ohio; three sons, George T. Roach, Xenia, Ohio; Elmo Roach, Dayton, Ohio, and Herbert Roach, Harveysburg, Ohio; three daughters, Mrs. Reva Bond, Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Catherine Housman, Dayton, Ohio, and Mrs. Carlie Buckley, Atlanta, Ga.; three stepsons, A. J. Caudill, Beattyville; Otis Caudill, Jacksonville, Fla., and Marvin Caudill, Cheboyhan, Mich.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Juanita Malear, Lexington; Mrs. Norma Jean Wiley, Dayton, Ohio; two brothers, George Roach, Kokomo, Ind., and Frank Roach, Hamilton, Ohio; three sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Durbin, Beattyville; Mrs. Annie Cole, Kokomo, Ind., and Mrs. Bertha Phillips, Los Angeles, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.


Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Newman Funeral Home by the Rev. Sam Wilson. Burial will be in the Proctor Cemetery. The body is at the funeral home.
