DIED

At his residence on Sleepy Creek, on the morning of Oct 31, 1891. Lewis Allen aged 73 years and 24 days.

The funeral sermon was preached at Sphors X Roads Church by Rev. A. L. Burket of Evangelical Association, and was listened to by one of the largest assemblages ever known at that place.

The subject of the above notice was born near Greencastle, Franklin county, Pa. Oct 7, 1818. And was of Scotch Irish descent. Mr. Allen moved to Morgan county Va. about the year 1859 and shortly thereafter married in this county, where he has resided since, by his sterling qualities and uprightness of character he soon gained the confidence of his fellow citizens and in the fifties was elected Magistrate and also by the voice of the people was chosen Commissioner of Revenue, a position similar to that of Assessor, which position he held, we understand at the breaking out of the war.

During the John Brown trouble Mr. Allen was first Lieutenant in Captain Wm. Caldwell's Company in the 89th Va. Militia. In 1862 he was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Wm. J. Fleece, Sheriff. In October 1863 was elected to the Sheriff of Morgan county and was re-elected in 1865 to the same position. Mr. Allen was also elected a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1872. By his uniform kindness, sociable manners and charitable disposition probably no man in the county was more generally known and more respected by our people than was Lewis Allen. Mr. Allen never became a member of any church, but at heart was a christian, which was evidenced during his life by his charitable acts to his fellow man preferring to show by his acts and deeds rather than by ostentatious actions his true Christian Character.

A good man and a good citizen has passed away and the community at large will miss his genial and cheery greeting that was his custom to extend all.

To his bereaved family the sympathy of our people will be extended in loss of a good kind Husband and Father.
