Horace W. Clay, 65, died Wednesday, August 25, at 9:50 p.m. in Collingsworth General Hospital after a long illness. He had lived in Thomas Nursing Center a number of months. The family home is 1725 East Avenue.
Mr. Clay farmed in the Quail area for many years, where he was active in community life. He was then employed by the Wellington School System until his health failed and he retired.
He came to Quail with his family in 1918 from Palo Pinto County, where he was born November 4, 1910. He was the son of the late T.M. and Katie Dodson Clay.
Mr. Clay attended school in the Ring Community.
On October 18, 1935, he was married to Maude Sexton, of the Ring Community, at Hedley. they lived at Ring and Buck Creek.
He was a member of the Baptist Church.
Funeral services were conducted in First Baptist Church at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 28. Officiating was the Rev. Elvis Pitts of Lubbock, a former Quail and Wellington pastor. Burial was in North Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Kelso Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Palo F. Cummings, Bill Lowe, Albert Fulcher, Raymond Hodges, Tommy Thomas and Donald Langley.
Honorary pallbearers were Dalton Vaughan, Dick Campbell, R.F. Harris, J.F. Isaacs, Palo C. Cummings, and A.B. Boyett.
Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Maude Clay; a son, Herbert Clay of Bellmead; three daughters, Mrs. James Colson of Lubbock, Mrs. Ronnie Colson of Amarillo and Mrs. Ernest L. Maxwell of Houston; a brother, James Herbert Clay of Muleshoe; six sisters, Mrs. Lena Young and Mrs. Alta Tyler of Lamesa, Mrs. Hassie Arnold of Silverton, Mrs. Adelle Burdine of Melrose, New Mexico, Mrs. Shirley O'Hair of Quail and Mrs. Ola Mae Crosby of Wellington. There are 12 grandchildren.
A daughter, Cleta Clay Long, preceded him in death.
