William J. Newman
William Jesse Newman, 93, well known resident of the Hebron community, near
Ga­lax, died in a local hospital early Tuesday morning, Feb­ruary 2, 1960. He had been in declining health for a con­siderable length of time.
Mr. Newman was born in Carroll County December 2, 1866, son of John Newman and
Mrs. Sally Bowers New­man.
Surviving are four sons, Lester Newman, Ellis New­man and Charles Newman, all of
Galax; two daughters, Mrs. Flora Dillon and Mrs. Bertie Carico, both of Galax; one
brother, Alonzo Newman, Woodlawn; one sister, Mrs. Etta Smythers, Galax; 18
grandchildren; 31 great-grand­children, and two great-grand­children.
Funeral services were con­ducted at Hebron ChristianChurch Wednesday (February 3) at
2:00 p., m. by the Rev. W. Isom Melton, pastor of the church, and the Rev. A. C. Meadows, former pastor of the First Christian Church, Galax.
Interment was in the Church Cemetery.
The body remained at Vaughan - Guynn Funeral Home until 1:00 p. m. Wed­nesday, when it was removed to the church.
