AMBROISE BELAIR Born the son of Jean Marie Belair (1812-1890) and Olive Grenier (1816-?) in St. Valentin, Quebec. Ambroise was a day laborer when first married; he subsequently worked as a farm hand and ferry boat operator in the area around St. Valentin, Quebec. Ambroise emigrated to New York in 1884, taking most of his family with him, and worked as a lumberjack in the Adirondack Mountain region. He became a textile mill worker in Massachusetts in 1900. He could not read or write and spoke limited English. Ambroise married his first cousin, Philomene Elize "Alice" Gauthier (1842-1918) on 16 Apr 1861 and subsequently sired 13 children.
