Marvin was the son of Major Grinnell and his second wife Delilah Wheeler Grinnell. He and Miss Viola J. Allis wed on March 6, 1878 in Barre. Marvin was a merchant when single but settled down into farming after his marriage. Six children were born to the couple. After Viola's death, Marvin resided with his daughter Edna Grinnell Steele and her family in Barre.
