Major accompanied his brother John from Spafford, New York where their family had settled to Orleans County. In doing so he left his sweetheart Betsey Fisher, but returned and married her in Spafford on January 25, 1825. Major and Betsey made their home on a farm in Barre where they raised seven children. These children ranged in age from fifteen to four when Betsey passed away.
Major remarried soon after to Delilah Wheeler and had five more children.
