Funeral services for Cordell T. Grimsley, 84, of Cookeville, who passed away March 2, 1997, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 5 from the Monterey Baptist Church. Mr. Grimsley will lie-in-state at the church Wednesday from noon until time for the services. Interment will follow in the Welch Memorial Cemetery. Rev. Bill Vance and Rev. Gerrald R. Bland will officiate at the services.
Honorary pallbearers will be the senior adult men's Sunday school class.
Active pallbearers will be Dan Parrott, Luke Turner, Clift Bishop, Jerry Robinson, Billy and Shea Grimsley, Jack Parrott and Carson Caudill.
Mr. Grimsley suffered an apparent massive stroke Sunday morning at First Baptist Church while preparing breakfast for the Baptist Men's Brotherhood meeting. He died later that day in Cookeville General Hospital. He was born Jan. 8, 1913 in Putnam, Tenn., and was the son of the late Howard and Ella Phillips Grimsley. He was retired from the tax revenue division with the State of Tennessee Department of Revenue. He was a member of the Monterey First Baptist Church for more than 70 years; a member of the men's senior adult Sunday school class and a member of the church choir for more than 50 years.
He was a member of the Monterey Masonic Lodge No. 751 and a member of the American License Plate Association.
He was an avid outdoorsman.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Emogene Sampley Grimsley; daughter, Ella Sue Grimsley; son, Charles Grimsley; sister, Estelle Grimsley and brothers, Virgil, Lowell and Hugh Grimsley.
Survivors include his special friend, Mrs. Rose Pinkston of Cookeville; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Roy Howard of Crossville; sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Frances Grimsley of Jackson, Tenn., Jack and Linda Grimsley of Greensburg, Ky., John and Marla Grimsley of Pleasant Hill, Tenn., Bill Grimsley of Columbia, Tenn. and Robert Grimsley of Crossville; 17
grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; brother, James Grimsley of Tampa and sisters, Daphine Huddleston of Clarksville and Lorelle Meredith of Dayton, Ohio.
