James Robert Nixon was born 1854 to Thomas Council Nixon and Gatsy Maude Richardson shortly after they arrived in Walker County, Texas from Alabama. They settled in the Old Waverly area of Walker County, where his father built a two story log house.

James first married Laura Lee Moore and they had five children, Thomas Council, James Robert Jr, Chellie Boyd, Ida Maude and Gatsy Gertrude. Laura died in Calvert, Robertson County, Texas when Gatsy was still an infant in 1896. At this time, none of the family know exactly where she is buried.

After Laura's death, James returned to Walker County with his young children and bought a league of land in West Sandy. His infant daughter, Gatsy, went to live with his sister Mary. The rest remained with him.

In 1901, he remarried to Willie Mae Mercer. He and Willie had eight children, six of whom lived to adulthood, Aaron Bruce, Nettie, Ruth Ella, Anna Belle, Grace and Hazel. Willie Frank and Willie Mae had a set of twin boys who died young and one son who died, Willie Frank, who died in 1916 of Tyoid Fever along with his mother..

James Robert was a farmer like his father before him, but he and Laura also ran a boarding house for a while.

James Robert died the year after Willie Mae, in 1917, leaving his young family to be cared for by his oldest son, Thomas Council Nixon.
