He was captain of Company C, 20th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry, made up of men mostly from Lextington County. This regiment served on the coast of South Carolina in Charleston. They were present for duty in Battery Wagner on Morris Island during the siege. The 20th South Carolina was commanded by Colonel L. M. Keitt who was from Saint Matthew, SC.
