The family came through Ellis Island and went to Canada to collect the eldest son, Heinrich (Henry), who was staying with cousins in Winnipeg, Barbara Hamburg and her family.
The family crossed into America at North Dakota, moving South toward Hastings, Nebraska by train.
The family stayed in Hastings, until 1914. His father went to Gering, Nebraska to help with the construction of the new Lutheran Church. Once the construction was complete, the family moved to Gering. John and Henry Jr., stayed behind in Hastings.
John worked as a cook for a cafe, he lived in the apartment above it. He also worked with wood, and was said to have made toys for children in the Hastings area, every Christmas.
He was never married, but was living with Marie Anna Hoffman.
