Joe D. Gault, Sr., age 84, prominent citizen of Dardanelle, died Wednesday, November 26, 1969 at Dardanelle. He served this area for more than 42 years as a public servant. In 1916 he served two terms as Yell County Treasurer, in 1924 he served two terms as Yell County Sheriff, in 1937 he was appointed postmaster of Dardanelle and served 18 years and in 1956 he was elected Mayor of Dardanelle and served 6 years. He was a member of Bright Star Masonic Lodge and had served as Worshipful Master, and 32 degree Mason and a member of Simitar Shrine Temple. He was one of the oldest members of his Lodge, also was elected as Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge, State of Arkansas. He was a member of the first United Methodist Church of Dardanelle and a native of Brownwood, Tex., a son of the late T. R. and Ella Hulse Gault.

His wife preceded his death in 1981.

Survivors are one son, Joe D. Gault, Jr., of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Mrs. Swann Sinclair of Little Rock; three brothers, Willie Gault and Leo Gault of Danville and Tony Gault of North Little Rock; one sister, Mrs. Baxter Lofland of Gravelly; one grandson and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the First United Methodist Church at Dardanelle Friday morning by Rev. C. Houston Farmer and Dr. Charles Casteel, ministers of First United Methodist Church. Interment was at Brearley Cemetery in Dardanelle, Services were in care of Cornwell Funeral Service.
