Francis Joseph Endris was born in Pana on Thursday, June 24th, 1920 the seventh son of George Anthony and Ethel Mae Fox Endris. He attended and graduated from Sacred Heart Grade and Middle School in Pana. He then then attended and graduated from Pana Township High School in 1939 where he was a star athlete on both the football field and the baseball diamond. He was employed at Kuhn's Drug Store where he worked both in the store proper and in the pharmacy with Wilbur Kuhn.

Directly after high school he left Pana and went to draftsman's school in Chicago where he lived with his brother Vince and sister-in-law Virginia Endris. Soon WWII broke out. He joined the US Marines on October 17th, 1941 and became a technical sergeant maintaining and co-piloting a Corsair in the Pacific Theater of Operations, Solomon Islands. He returned to Miramar in California in January 1944 and immediately asked for a furlough which he received. The furlough gave him one month's leave from June 28-July 28th 1944. At a cost of $92.35 plus tax he flew TWA from San Diego CA to St Louis MO. He came home to marry his longtime sweetheart, Dorcas Anne Hayes. They were married at St. Patrick's rectory in Pana on Monday, July 17th, 1944. Father Thomas J. O'Neil officiated and the bride's sister, Janis Hayes Naney, and her husband, Dr. A. Paul Naney on leave from the Army Medical Corps, attended.

I will tell the story of the how mom and dad's relationship began so that future generations may know it. Each parent told me at one time or another their own part of the tale. Dad said he first met mom when he and his brother Bob went to shovel coal into the Hayes family furnace one cold winter morning. He and Bob went out in the early hours each winter morning to stoke the furnaces which had been allowed to die down during the night. They received a weekly payment for this service most of which went into the Endris household funds. Mom was then in the 8th grade and dad was a freshman at PTHS. The next year mom went to PTHS. Mom said she was allowed to attend the Sadie Hawkins Day dance in the school gym but was too timid to ask dad to go even though she had heard through mutual friends that he was waiting for an invitation. When my grandmother heard this she bribed her daughter out of her shyness by offering to buy her a dress she had asked for but not yet gotten. Mom extended the invitation and the rest is family history.

After they were married they returned to Santa Barbara CA where they lived until dad was honorably discharged from the Marines on October 20th, 1945. He received several combat ribbons including combat action ribbon and the Presidential Unit Citation for Service. They returned to Pana with their newborn daughter, Francine Ruth, who was born on August 26th, 1945. Dad worked at Hayes Hatchery and Feed for about the next 20 years. Two other children were born during this time, Gaynelle Lynn born on June 19th 1947, and Fredric J. born on February 18th 1952. After leaving the hatchery dad was employed as an apprentice pharmacist and store manager at Metzger Drug Store in Pana, retiring in 1980. He enjoyed his grandchildren, golfing, and numerous other activities. Lastly, taking his vow of "until death do us part" very seriously, he spent the rest of his life taking loving care of his wife during an extended illness that began in 1990. She died at home in 1999; he died in 2001.
