Austin Grisham, pioneer and honored citizen of Elk Creek, passed away at his home Thursday evening, November 34, 1932, following a long illness of a heart ailment.
Mr. Grisham was one of the best known and high respected citizens of the county. He lived a long and honorable life having spent 61 years in the Elk Creek community, and for 52 years resided on the farm which was his home at the time of death. Honorable and kind in all his dealings with his fellow man, there was no one in his community held in higher esteem.
Austin Grisham was born in Bradley County, Tennessee on June 16, 1856, the son of Richard and Eliza Bower Grisham. He died at Elk Creek, Missouri on November 24, 1932, making his age at time of death 76 years, 5 months and 8 days.
He was married to Sarah Tabitha Nall, daughter of Rev. Wesley and Nancy Self Nall on October 28, 1877. To this union four children were born of which one, Benjamin Frederick, died in infancy. He is survived by his wife and three sons, Luther Lilburn and Richard B. of Elk Creek, and John Wesley of Cabool, eleven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one brother, Benjamin, of Elk Creek, many nieces and nephews and other friends. He was preceded in death by three sisters.
Austin was left an orphan at the age of 7 and was reared by his eldest sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Eli (Lizzy) Fitzgerald, and came with them to Missouri at the age of 13, moving to Elk Creek 2 years later.
He professed Christ as his Savior in early manhood and has been a member of Chapel Hill Baptist church for about 20 years.
Funeral services were held at Steely Chapel and were conducted by Rev. J.J. Carty. Burial was in the family graveyard, Nall Cemetery in Elk Creek, Missouri.
