Reed Helmer of Fairfield, died suddenly Nov. 30 at Wm. Lawton's camp 10 miles
above Gray, aged 20 years. He had gone to the camp with a party consisting of
Attorney Myron W. Van Auken, Dr. Palmer and Edward Rice of Utica, to carry Mr.
Van Auken's son Clarence, who was at the camp threatened with pneumonia out of
the woods. The party reached the camp Tuesday afternoon and at midnight young
He1mer was taken seriously ill. Dr. Palmer did all that was possible for the
young man but he grew steadily worse and died Wednesday night. Dr. Palmer
diagnosed the case as one of spinal meningitis. The body was removed Thursday to
the home of his sister, Mrs. Bohyr, in Middleville, from whence the funeral was
held Sunday at 10 o'clock and from Dolgeville at 2 o'clock.
